The process of sending artworks through the mail, with the envelope, the stamp and the postmark as entire part of the mail-artobject make this process to what we call MAIL-ART. Around the postobjects various actions can take place: performances, exhibitions and documentation. Nowadays hundreds of Mail-artists send each other mail-art: postcards, letters, packages, collages, artistamps, books, xeroxes, invitations, video, tapes, etc… This mouvement we call the MAIL-ARTNETWORK.
El proceso de enviar obras de arte a través del correo, con el sobre, la estampilla o timbre y el sello como una parte del objeto de arte correo hace este proceso al que llamamos ARTE-CORREO. Alrededor de los objetos enviados se pueden realizar varias acciones: performances, exhibiciones y documentación. Actualmente cientos de artistas postales se envían arte correo: postales, cartas, paquetes, collages, estampillas de artista, libros, fotocopias, invitaciones, video, cintas, etc… Este movimiento es lo que llamamos LA RED DEL ARTE CORREO.
In the beginning of the 60’s, some artists started to integrate the mail in their work. The American artist, Ray Johnson, did send pieces of his collages to other artists, to non-artists & friends. They reacted by returning a reaction. This action / reaction became the center of the «New York Correspondence School». Some people from this «group» came in contact with other networks (of visual poets, etc..) This way the first Mail-art network was originated. MAIL-ART has several pioneers: the Futurists, some members of the Gutai & Fluxus mouvement, the Dadaists, visual and concrete poets, etc.
En inicios de los 60’s, algunos artistas comenzaron a integral el correo en su trabajo. El artista norteamericano, Ray Johnson, envío piezas a sus colegas y a no-artistas y amigos. Ellos reaccionaron al devolver una reacción. Esta acción / reacción se convirtió en el centro de la «Nueva Escuela por Correspondencia de Nueva York». Algunas personas de este «grupo» se pusieron en contacto con otras redes (de poetas visuales, etc.) De esta forma se originó la primera red de arte-correo. El ARTE CORREO tiene diversos pioneros: los Futuristas, algunos miembros de los movimientos Gutai & Fluxus, los Dadaístas, poetas concretos y visuales, etc.
Since 1986 we call mail-artists also networkers because they are active in/with several «media»: music, computer (internet, e-mail), fax, copy-art, performance, small-press, artists’ books, etc. Mail-art is communication-art; it is about communication between a sender and a receiver. That’s why MAIL-ART was anti-establishment art in the 70’s. It tried to bring art & life more together. For some mail-artists now, MAIL-ART is still social-art. Mail-art is an alternative, non-commercial, international, democratic, open network. Everybody can participate. Creative people can meet in collective projects locally – globally.
Desde 1986 llamamos artistas postales a los artistas de la red porque están activos en / con varios «medios»: música, computación (internet, e-mail) fax, arte xerográfico, pequeñas impresiones, libros de artista, etc. El arte correo es arte de comunicación; se trata de comunicación entre un emisor y un receptor. Por eso el ARTE-CORREO se considero contra el status quo en los 70’s. Trató de unir el arte y la vida. Para algunos artistas postales hoy, el ARTE-CORREO aún es un arte social. El arte correo es una alternativa no-comercial, internacional, democrática, abierta. Todos pueden participar. Las personas creativas pueden coincidir en proyectos locales – globales. ;»)
